A few months ago, most of our sites were hit by a hacker. Thankfully, nothing really bad happened other than having all of our sites punished by Google for having thousands of pages of hacker-created duplicate content.
We’ve worked hard with a great team from wewatchyourwebsite.com and have cleaned everything out but now, our most profitable site – EatingforEnergy.ca – is still way off the radar.
Just type “Eating for Energy” into Google and good luck finding our site (or blog) within the first 6 pages of Google.
The frustrating part is that our site WAS ranked in the top 3 spots in Google for a our major keywords, bringing us several thousand visitors (and thus sales) per day…
Today, we’re lucky if we get 20 visitors organically! That’s right – just 20.
So after talking about this at length with my SEO expert, Rick Porter, he suggested I just set up a new site (worpdress-based) in the raw food diet niche and we start driving links to that site.
He figured, based on the competition with the raw food diet niche, we could have this site on page 1 of Google within 30-45 days.
So that’s I’m doing. In fact, we’ve already set up the new site which you can see at http://www.rawfooddietenergy.com
I would suggest that you occasionally check in to see what we’re doing to get this site ranked on page 1 in just a few short weeks.
In a nutshell, here’s our game plan (and feel free to use this as well on your own site):
1. Create a tightly-targeted domain around “raw food diet” with a .com URL that is based on a wordpress platform
Google prefers .com vs. .net or .org, etc… and favours wordpress-based sites because they are more dynamic than static sites.
2. Add good original content to the site at least ONCE per week.
This basically means adding a 400+ word post (with video is bonus) to the blog once per week keeping the topic tightly focused on the major keyword we want to rank for.
Within each post be sure to follow these 6 golden on-page SEO rules.
3. Start building links back to the site (naturally and progressively)
This is where I let Rick work his magic. I’ve spent a lot of time in the past driving links back to my sites but since working with Rick Porter, he’s taking our sites to a new level.
I basically give him my keywords and related URLs and he works his magic.
I really can’t thank Rick enough for the great work he continues to do for us.
4. Never give up!
The great part about SEO is that you can really achieve amazing things with consistent effort and the right tools. The bad news is that it’s a never ending race. Take your foot off the gas pedal for a few weeks and you’ll fall in the search engines.
That’s just the way it goes.
But I would much rather focus my time and energy on building great sites that rank amazingly well organically simply because it kicks PPC in the nuts for conversions!
Visitors from organic searches are much more likely to take action than those coming through a paid ad – it’s been shown time and time again.
So there you go.
I hope these 4 simple steps can give you some more insight into how to get your site up and running (or optimized) to start ranking higher.
