Lesson 12 – From Scratch to Blogging Profits

A few months ago, most of our sites were hit by a hacker. Thankfully, nothing really bad happened other than having all of our sites punished by Google for having thousands of pages of hacker-created duplicate content.

We’ve worked hard with a great team from wewatchyourwebsite.com and have cleaned everything out but now, our most profitable site – EatingforEnergy.ca – is still way off the radar.

Just type “Eating for Energy” into Google and good luck finding our site (or blog) within the first 6 pages of Google.

The frustrating part is that our site WAS ranked in the top 3 spots in Google for a our major keywords, bringing us several thousand visitors (and thus sales) per day…

Today, we’re lucky if we get 20 visitors organically! That’s right – just 20.

So after talking about this at length with my SEO expert, Rick Porter, he suggested I just set up a new site (worpdress-based) in the raw food diet niche and we start driving links to that site.

He figured, based on the competition with the raw food diet niche, we could have this site on page 1 of Google within 30-45 days.

I’m game!

So that’s I’m doing. In fact, we’ve already set up the new site which you can see at http://www.rawfooddietenergy.com

I would suggest that you occasionally check in to see what we’re doing to get this site ranked on page 1 in just a few short weeks.

In a nutshell, here’s our game plan (and feel free to use this as well on your own site):

1. Create a tightly-targeted domain around “raw food diet” with a .com URL that is based on a wordpress platform

Google prefers .com vs. .net or .org, etc… and favours wordpress-based sites because they are more dynamic than static sites.

2. Add good original content to the site at least ONCE per week.

This basically means adding a 400+ word post (with video is bonus) to the blog once per week keeping the topic tightly focused on the major keyword we want to rank for.

Within each post be sure to follow these 6 golden on-page SEO rules.

3. Start building links back to the site (naturally and progressively)

This is where I let Rick work his magic. I’ve spent a lot of time in the past driving links back to my sites but since working with Rick Porter, he’s taking our sites to a new level.

I basically give him my keywords and related URLs and he works his magic.

I really can’t thank Rick enough for the great work he continues to do for us.

4. Never give up!

The great part about SEO is that you can really achieve amazing things with consistent effort and the right tools. The bad news is that it’s a never ending race. Take your foot off the gas pedal for a few weeks and you’ll fall in the search engines.

That’s just the way it goes.

But I would much rather focus my time and energy on building great sites that rank amazingly well organically simply because it kicks PPC in the nuts for conversions!

Visitors from organic searches are much more likely to take action than those coming through a paid ad – it’s been shown time and time again.

So there you go.

I hope these 4 simple steps can give you some more insight into how to get your site up and running (or optimized) to start ranking higher.

Lesson 11 – Blog Commenting Made Easy

Hey guys,

I’ve got an awesomely powerful AND simple trick that you can use to find the most appropriates blogs on which to comment.

But first, why should you comment on other blogs?

Here are few good reasons:

1. It can give you life-long backlinks to your site (or our site via your affiliate link).

2. It’s a great way to connect with other blogs in the industry

3. It’s easy to do and can takes a couple minutes (or longer if you want) per week.

4. It’s a FREE way to get a lot of backlinks to your site (or ours)

Now here’s the simple trick.

In order to find relevant blogs that have a comment box that will enable you to leave a comment with your URL + anchor text you could spend a lot of time trying the right ones.

Unless you use this simple formula. Here we go…

STEP #1 – In the Google search bar enter the following:

“post a comment” -”comments closed” -”you must be logged in” “keyword here” “powered by wordpress”

STEP #2 – replace “keyword here” with the actual keyword for which you want to find related blogs.

For instance, you might use the keyword “cleanse” if you’re trying to target blogs that deal with cleansing and detox.  A perfect fit for our Total Wellness Cleanse program.

STEP #3 – Now that Google has given you the relevant blogs, you just have to go through each one and leave your comments.

Make sure your comments actually add value to the conversation.

Also, although ideally it would be great if in the NAME field you could use your “anchor text” (for SEO purposes) most blog owners (myself included) will delete comments from people who leave ridiculous names like “NYC personal trainer”.

Is that really your name? I don’t think so. Trash!

So just put your real name (or pen name) in the NAME field and enter your desired URL in the WEBSITE field before you enter your comment.

If you’re lucky, you might even be able to add your website URL or affiliate link in the actual comment box, if that blog doesn’t moderate its comments.

Try it and see.

Lesson 7 – Hide Your Affiliate Link With This Plugin

My SEO guy just told me about a cool new plugin that can help you hide or “cloak” your affiliates links on your blog.

This is something you should definitely be doing because it’s come to my attention that Google has punished several sties for displaying bare affiliate links (ie. http://xxxxx.mp3trainer.hop.clickbank.net, etc…)

I personally haven’t used the plugin but if you feel it helpful for your marketing efforts than by all means just download it and get it on your blog. Plus, it’s free.

Apparently, it’s also really helpful for giving you nice-looking URLs that you can even use in Youtube videos or audio podcasts. Pretty cool.

Anyways, thought I’d let you know. Here’s the link to grab the “GoCodes” wordpress plugin:

Still working hard on getting a bunch of new banners, autoresponder emails, and more great marketing materials for you. Stay tuned.

Lesson 6 – How Often Should You Post Content to Your Site or Blog?

Should you update your site or blog daily, weekly, monthly, or is there an ideal frequency for putting up new content on your site?

That’s a very good question and there are really 2 lines of thought.

The first one comes from the fact that Google loves sites that are generates new and unique content on a frequent basis.

That’s why HUGE sites that follow the “publisher model”, which have 100,000+ pages of content, are constantly churning out new content.  And, in most cases that means several new article pages each day.

Needless to say, these sites have many writers doing the work but what about you…

Should you break your back writing new articles every single day?

Well, if you love doing that then you should. And give it a few months and you’ll find your site climbing pretty steadily in the search engines. And that’s a good thing, especially since you’re promoting our programs. You want others to find your site. That’s the name of the game.

But the flip side is this…

Would you be better off with just 1 AMAZING blog post or article each week rather than 5-7 mediocre ones???

It’s definitely food for thought.

But here’s the way I see it…

The best way for your blog/site to get traffic is for OTHER PEOPLE  to recommend via links, facebook likes, and any other means.

The chances of that happening with generic, mediocre content are slim to none.

But if you write an amazing blog post each week and people start finding out about your and the fact that you’re putting out awesome stuff, they will most likely come back, comment on your blog, and share it others.

And that’s really what Google is looking for!

Google wants to see sites that create community, engage involvement (ie. comments), and are updated with regular and unique content.

That’s pretty much it.

Then you just have to get backlinks to your site. This has already been discussed in one my previous posts and I’ll also be sharing another one of my newfound favourite tools for generating backlinks for almost no cost at all!

Stay tuned for that. But in the meantime, the best way to get people coming back to your blog/site and sharing it others is to be yourself. Tell your story, share your experience with our program(s), and connect with them on a deeper level.

Over time, these readers will trust and like you and will be more likely to click on your banners and affiliate links, thus making you more commissions.

One final thought…

Whichever strategy you decide to use (daily, weekly, monthly postings, etc…) just make sure that you’re consistent with it.

There’s nothing worse than visiting a blog or site that hasn’t been update for several weeks or even months. People want to fresh content – so give it to them.

Lesson 5 – Best Marketing Method of All Time

What’s the best marketing method of all time? At least online?

Building a relationship with your leads.

In order to do that, you first need to have some kind list building tool like aweber, icontact, etc… that can manage the people who sign up for your “free offer”.

What I mean by this is that you need to build a list.

And in order to build a list you need to give something away for free on your blog or website. Otherwise, people will simply not give you their emails and a means of contacting them.

More on that in a second.

The reason that building a list and building a relationship with that list is so powerful for marketing our cleanse is that it’s much easier to recommend something to someone once they trust you.

Just think about it…

Would you take advice on where to go for dinner from a good friend who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to food or some stranger off the street?

Obviously your friend.

The same thing applies to marketing and selling products online. Actually, it’s probably even more important online since people are more skeptical, scared of credit card fraud, and other apprehensions that come with buying online.

That’s why it’s so important to capture email (and names are better too) so you can start communicating with these new leads on a regular basis (at least weekly).

Give them good information. Help them with their problems. Give it some time for that trust to build and then it’s a lot easier to recommend that they buy something at your request.

You get the point, right?

Time and time again email marketing has proven to be the MOST effective means of marketing. Simply because it’s all about someone recommending something based on a relationship that has been built over a few days, months, years.

Does that make sense?

So if you have already started to build a list that’s great. Continue to do so. If not, here are some simple steps to get started.

STEP #1 - Do a Google search for Aweber, iContact, Constant Contact, 1shoppingcart (that’s what I use), or some other list management software and get signed up for an account.

Most of them are free for 30 days and then about $20/month when you’re just getting started.

Be sure to go through their tutorial videos to learn how to use their service (really pretty simple) and how can you start building your list.

STEP #2 – Create a free report OR use one of my mine.

In exchange for peoples’ emails you’ll need to give them something. And ideally this report, or video, or interview, etc… should relate to the goals of the people that visit your site.

Do they want to lose weight, cleanse naturally, etc…? Think about it and then go to work, or use one of my free reports.

STEP #3 – Create an optin box on your site

This optin box (which integrates with your list management software from above) should ideally be placed at the very top of your site – either on the top left or top right – so that the visitor’s eyes gravitate towards your free offer.

At the same time, you can also have a “pop-up” optin box appear on your site. I use a software called “Pop Up Domination 2.0″ and it integrates with your wordpress or html site. A have it set so that when a visitor is about to click away from the site, the pop-up appears to tell them about our free gift.

STEP #4 – Communicate frequently

I would recommend emailing your list at least once per week if not more. In fact, what I’ve found in my business is that the more I email my list with quality information and emails that build trust, the more my business grows!

Don’t be annoying, just focus on giving them great content and stuff they want. And if they don’t want hear from you then they can always unsubscribe. And who cares because those are not the people who would buy anyways!

That’s it.

I’ll be honest, this isn’t a get rich quick scheme (I would never recommend one of those anyways) but it is the most sure way of succeeding online for years to come.

Building a list is like a savings account that keeps on growing and continues to pay you interest. IT

That’s all for today. Get started with these simple steps and get ready to prosper!

Lesson 3 – Hosting Your Own Blog and Must-Have Plugins

In Lesson 1, we talked about setting up a free wordpress blog. Those are ok but if you can host a wordpress blog on your own domain, then that is much much better.

Doing so will allow you have your domain name as your blog/website (ie. www.joeblow.com instead of joeblow.wordpress.com). This hosted blog offers more options, more flexibility, cooler themes, and better performance in the search engines.

Honestly, it might cost you $50 to get this all setup. But again, if you’re serious about online marketing this is something you should definitely be doing.

Here’s a video that explains the process (and below I share a number of must-have plugins that you can grab for free and set up on your blog):

Must-Have Plugins:

Click on the following plugins to go to their download page (will open in a new window). You can then easily upload them to your “/wp-plugins” folder through your FTP software.

Paid plugins (awesome nonetheless)
